패널 1: 섬의 모든 갈매기가 날갯짓의 폭풍을 일으키며 한꺼번에 날아오른다. 로카가 위를 올려다보자 손에서 물고기가 미끄러져 떨어진다. 로카: ‘새들이…’ 패널 2: 시장 저편에서 비버와 카박이 하늘을 올려다본다. 카박: ‘비버…?’ 패널 3: 섬 아래로 늘어진 그물 아래, 옆구리에 육각형 판이 벌집처럼 붙은 거대한 창백한 형체가 깊은 바다에서 솟아오른다. 패널 4: 라하나는 가판대 아래에서 부풀어 오르는 물을 내려다보고, 그녀의 창이 떨어진다. 라하나: ‘가운데로 가!’ ‘뛰어!’

In the dark at the bottom of the sea, something is counting. On Candyreef, a candy-coloured island of floating trash, Roka wakes to a water bag in the face from his street crew, lifts breakfast from the old woman who would have fed him anyway, and tells the kid who follows him that he doesn't owe anybody. Then the gulls lift all at once, and a Maw eats half the island. A day and a night alone at sea later, the Garden Ship fishes him out and orders him to walk its treadwheels for fish heads. Roka is nobody's slave, so he goes looking for something to steal instead, and breaks into a barnacled case dredged from the seabed. The silver dust inside climbs into his arm and says hello. It is polite. It is curious. It wants every human dead. And it has just started counting again.
