Page 1. A wide establishing panel of the Tiny Case Agency clubroom — a low wooden desk, a stack of cardboard boxes, a battered corkboard, a small white mini-fridge, a folding metal chair and a single square window with warm low afternoon sunlight. A huge dark cat-shaped shadow with two pointed 'horns' falls across the pastel wall. Momo stands frozen in the middle of the room in her too-big mustard-yellow trench coat and dusty-red scarf, clutching her oversized magnifying glass in both sleeve-swallowed hands and pointing up at the shadow. Ganta sits on the floor by the desk with his pale-blue juice box, and Biscuit the round white cat sits up on top of the cardboard boxes in the sunbeam by the window — the true source of the shadow. MOMO: 'Something is on the wall.'

About this chapter

A huge horned shadow looms across the clubroom wall in the low afternoon sun, and Momo is certain a beast has broken into the Tiny Case Agency. She stalks the monster as it grows larger and larger, corners it, and pounces at the wall — only to find it bare. The "intruder" was Biscuit the whole time, sitting up in the sunbeam on the boxes with her ears throwing the horns. Ganta says so on page five. Momo declares she drove the beast off, closes the case, and falls asleep.
