Akane pours cloudy flour-water from a jug into the sizzling pan; steam billows up. Caption: "STEP 5. Pour in the 100 ml water with 1 tsp flour. Stand back, it spits." Akane sets a clear glass lid with a wooden knob on the pan; the gyoza steam inside. Caption: "Cover right away. Steam over medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes." Rina lifts the lid to peek, laughing, as Akane reaches over with her chopsticks to tap her hand. Rina: "Just a peek!" The lid back on the pan, the glass fogged with steam. Caption: "Don't lift the lid. Every peek lets out the steam that cooks the tops."

About this chapter
Akane makes pan-fried gyoza with a crispy lace wing from scratch, but this time she is not alone: her rascal younger sister Rina drops in, steals tastes, folds a lumpy "gyoza with character" and lifts the lid at the worst moment. Captions walk the reader through every amount, fold and heat setting, ending with both sisters at the little table, the second chair finally taken.
