In a stone chamber, an older man gestures toward a large altar marked with purple symbols, while a young man raises one finger. Older man: “Miss Shaw. That is the Black Altar of Varos! It has had an ocean of sacrificial blood split upon it. It has survived purges, inquisitions, and one unexpectedly determined Cardinal across a dozen centuries! It is not a space to eat one's breakfast upon.” Young man: “Um... she made a compelling point, sir. With the altar in the middle of the room like that, it's a major trip hazard. There were also exposed pointy things left out all over it. Now it's ready for use whenever you need it and safely out of the way outside of rituals.” A dark-haired woman stands with her arms crossed. Woman: “Thank you, Sam. I am pleased that one person in this chamber understands that ‘ancient’ and ‘historically important’ are not exemptions from workplace safety law.” The older man and young man stand on opposite sides of the altar. Older man: “The altar predates both the workplace and the law governing it.” Young man: “The floor doesn't. Sir.” The older man gestures at the altar. Older man: “Those ‘exposed pointy things’ are consecrated ritual implements. Their precise arrangement has remained unchanged since the altar was installed.” “One of them was balanced on the edge.” “It was positioned for immediate access.” The young man holds a round metal object beside a floor grate. Young man: “It went through my shoe.”
