Lizzie rides home from the estate a different person than the one who left, Darcy's letter reordering every memory she was sure of — George's warm, wounded coffee-shop story now reading as a con, Darcy's cold warnings now reading as the truth she got backwards. At home she finally tells Jane: she was wrong about both men, George lied about everything, and one piece of the truth isn't hers to repeat, so they'll say nothing and just watch. Then the militia crowd throws its going-away bash and Lizzie has to face George one last time. He fishes about her visit to the estate; she, finally armored, tells him she's 'heard both sides now,' and for one flat second the easy warmth drops off his face before the hollow charm snaps back and he melts into the departing crowd. But the danger doesn't leave with him: Lydia announces she's been invited to follow the whole crew to the coast for the summer, thrilled and oblivious, and when Lizzie begs her father to stop it he waves it off with a dry 'Lydia will be a cheaper fool away than at home.' Underneath the Wickham of it all, Jane sees the heavier thing Lizzie is carrying — Darcy. Lizzie admits it: she met a genuinely good man and told him he was the last man alive she'd ever want, and the woman who prides herself on reading people got the only two that mattered completely wrong. The chapter closes at her dark window, the opened letter in her hands: she will never see him again, and only now does she wish she would.

Two stacked panels on a train home in shifting cool-to-warm light. Top: Lizzie sits by the window in her olive-green jacket, a thick opened cream letter resting in her lap, staring out at the countryside, hollow and pensive. Thought bubble: 'I've read that letter three times. I still can't unread it.' Bottom: a close-up on Lizzie's eyes as she quietly reassesses everything she was sure of.

A dense six-panel memory montage. 1) Sepia memory: Wickham over coffee, warm and wounded, telling his sob story — but drawn a touch too smooth now. 2) Present: Lizzie on the train, eyes narrowing as the memory curdles. 3) Cool memory: Darcy at the dance, guarded, giving his quiet warning. 4) Present: Lizzie, the warning landing correctly this time, stricken. 5) Memory: Darcy sternly shutting a door on a faltering Wickham — he stopped him. 6) Present: close on Lizzie, the whole picture inverting, quietly devastated. The narration threads through: Darcy made sure I got nothing / You took a payout. Then came back for more. / Be careful whose story you believe. / You were warning me. I called it guilt. / He went after Darcy's teenage sister. Darcy stopped him. / I got both of them exactly backwards.

Two stacked panels in the warm, golden-lit Bennet home. Top: Lizzie steps in the front door with a shoulder bag; Jane rises from the couch, gentle and glad. Jane: 'You're back! How was Charlotte?' Bottom: close on Lizzie managing a tired smile that doesn't reach her eyes. Lizzie: 'Charlotte's... fine. It was a long trip.'
