Alone at Charlotte's cottage the morning after Darcy's disastrous proposal, Lizzie sits with the thick sealed letter he pressed into her hands, certain it's nothing but a rich man's excuses — and daring herself to even open it. She does. The letter answers her two charges in order. First Jane: Darcy admits he pulled Bingley away, but because he genuinely believed Jane felt nothing — she hid everything behind that serene, polite smile, exactly as the reader has always known she does — and Lizzie's smirk falters because she cannot honestly argue it. Then George: the truth she was so sure she already had, turned inside out. George was raised almost as family, provided for generously, took a large payout and blew through it, came back for more, was refused — and then, the part that stops her cold, tried to run off with Darcy's shy sixteen-year-old sister for her inheritance before Darcy stopped it. Every warm, wounded thing George told her over coffee reorders itself into a con; every cold, guarded thing Darcy said becomes a warning she got backwards. Lizzie traces her certainty all the way back to a single overheard 'tolerable' and realizes she — the one who prides herself on reading people — got the two that mattered completely wrong. The chapter closes on the same frame it opened, the envelope now open in her hands and the verdict she came here certain of gone: until this moment, she never really knew herself.

A wide establishing shot of a warm, cozy corner of Charlotte's cottage: morning light through a window, a wooden table and chair, plants and a jug of flowers. Lizzie Bennet — warm light-tan skin, freckles, dark-brown wavy half-up hair, olive-green utility jacket over a white tee — leans back with her arms loosely crossed, one eyebrow cocked in challenge, looking at a thick sealed cream envelope on the table before her. Her thought bubble reads: 'Three whole pages. To defend himself. This should be good.'

Two stacked panels. Top panel: a close view of Lizzie's hands lifting the thick cream envelope off the table and turning it over, no writing visible on it. Bottom panel: a close-up of Lizzie's face and hands as she tears the envelope open along the top edge, jaw set, bracing herself. Her thought bubble reads: 'Fine. Convince me.'

Two stacked panels. Top: Lizzie unfolds several handwritten pages (the handwriting is only faint indistinct strokes) and begins to read, wearing a small dry smirk. Bottom: an extreme close-up of her dark-brown eyes moving across the page, still smirking. A caption box in Darcy's letter-writing voice reads: 'I won't repeat what you refused last night. I ask only that you read the two charges you laid at my feet.'
