The brigands question their new guide as they move through the city. Brigand: “You know the market?” Guide: “I know every market, bridge, bathhouse, gambling den and tea stall between here and the Imperial Palace.” Leader: “We only need the market.” The guide smiles near a monumental seated statue and replies: “Everyone says that.”

About this chapter

Street Smarts opens with four brigands robbing a caravan outside the Imperial City. They head into the crowded festival streets with their loot, where an encounter with a streetwise local draws them into a city that isn’t quite as easy to navigate as they expect.
