Page 13. A wide closing panel, the same slightly high angle and framing as page 1. The clubroom is quiet again — same desk with the pencil mug and green casebook, same cardboard boxes, same corkboard, mini-fridge, folding chair and square window with warm afternoon light. Momo lies flat out asleep on the floorboards, coat pooled around her, eyes closed in happy curves, hugging her recovered magnifying glass; the single small mandarin orange sits on the boards beside her. Biscuit dozes in her open box, and Ganta sits on the stack of cardboard boxes with his pale-blue juice box, looking down at the sleeping detective and delivering the true verdict now that nobody is awake to argue. GANTA: 'It was in your pocket.'

Image description

Wide closing view of the Tiny Case Agency clubroom, matching the opening. A chibi girl in a mustard-yellow coat lies fast asleep on the floor hugging her magnifying glass, a single mandarin orange beside her. A chibi boy in a mint-green cat-ear hoodie sits on the cardboard boxes sipping a juice box and looking down at her, and a round white cat sleeps in an open box.

About this chapter

A sweet citrus smell drifts through the Tiny Case Agency, and Momo is certain a perfumed intruder has slipped in. She sniff-tracks the phantom guest to the mini-fridge, to Biscuit, to the boxes — but the scent follows her wherever she goes, because it is coming from a warm mandarin orange she pocketed days ago and forgot. Ganta points at her coat pocket on page five. She runs right past him, corners the cat, and only cracks the case when she reaches into her own pocket and pulls out the culprit.
