UP PERISCOPE A NOTE FROM THE CREATOR Hi, my name is Christopher English, and I’m the creator of this manga. Growing up, the things I loved most were giant monsters, including dinosaurs, Godzilla, Gamera, and Kong; science fiction, because I always felt I had been born too soon and wondered what life might be like on other planets; and military vehicles, especially aircraft carriers, submarines, and helicopters. I was also a huge comic book and anime fan. In the 1970s, manga hadn’t quite caught on in the U.S., but one show really caught my eye: Star Blazers, also known as Space Cruiser Yamato. Here was a show about a spacefaring battleship that brought together my love of science fiction and military vehicles. I was blown away. This manga is my homage to that show. I even chose a retro anime style to capture the spirit of what first inspired me. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it. Christopher English

About this chapter

Humanity has rebuilt civilization beneath the oceans, but the depths are already claimed. When an underwater city is destroyed by the Othryx, an alien species that sees humans as a threat to its world, the United Underseas Nations deploys its most advanced warship: the Deep Sea Cruiser Ryujin. Its crew must confront a powerful enemy while uncovering whether this war is a fight for survival or a conflict that could still be stopped.
