Nine days inside Ninefold and the city has not moved once. Merel starts measuring it, at first only to keep from going mad, and finds something worse than drifting numbers: numbers that agree. She improvises instruments, walks the same street until it confesses, and follows the exactness out to the last houses, where it stops dead and the land beyond refuses to hold a shape. Adai watches the work with an unease she cannot name, and Brisk, her apprentice, asks the question no Orranic has ever had reason to ask. By lamplight Merel draws one district, street by street: the first map in the history of the world. It answers why the city holds still. Then Brisk picks it up, carries it out into the morning, and asks whether she can show it to people.
ページ 1
A single full-page view. The harbour city of Ninefold seen from a high stone terrace: thousands of tiled roofs stepping down layered slopes toward a wide pale harbour full of moored ships, distant headlands dissolving into haze under a thin high white sky. Merel Vosberg, in her olive-grey field jacket and heavy boots, stands very small at a stone parapet in the lower left, notebook open in one hand. MEREL (thought): Day nine. The city has not moved.
ページ 2
Panel 1. A crowded market street of Ninefold, packed earth with a stone spine down the middle, awnings and produce crates and busy townsfolk. Merel walks a straight measured line heel to toe through the crowd, counting, notebook in one hand, ignoring the people parting around her. Adai stands at the left edge, leaning on her long pale walking stick, her face turned toward the sound of Merel's steps. ADAI: You have walked this street four times. Panel 2. Closer. Merel passes Adai without looking up from her notebook, pencil moving. Adai's expression gives nothing away, her head tilted slightly, listening. MEREL: Five. MEREL (thought): And it has been the same street every time.
ページ 3
Panel 1. A side street in Ninefold. Merel crouches over a wooden crate, laying out improvised surveying tools: a stone plumb bob on a cord, a long knotted measuring cord coiled in loops, a borrowed wooden carpenter's square, a straight peeled stick, her notebook set beside them. Her modern field jacket and boots look wrong against the pre-industrial street. A stall keeper leans out above and watches, baffled. Panel 2. Brisk, a skinny sixteen-year-old girl with an oversized travelling pack, leans in far too close over Merel's shoulder, staring at the knotted cord with her mouth open. Adai stands behind her, walking stick planted, face turned toward the girl. ADAI: Brisk. Give the woman her air. BRISK: She is doing something.
