3 A.M., rain on the dead-hours store. A calm night-owl customer — a tired man in a plain jacket — sets a single rice ball on the counter to buy, and it will not scan. No beep, no code on the wrapper, nothing in the system. Kaito, unable to sell it, give it away, or prove a thing that can't be rung up even exists, declares quiet war on one barcode and spends the entire dead shift trying to complete a single sale. He tries manual entry on a blank wrapper, flips a price binder that lists everything but this, interrogates the tracksuit regular about whether a rice ball has ever in the store's history failed to scan (nobody can verify), fends off a drunk salaryman's useless advice, and waits out head office's hold line — each failed attempt landing on the identical dead-eyed beat of Kaito holding the rice ball flat to the dead scanner and muttering '...nothing.' Rin livestreams the whole vigil as 'Man vs Rice Ball,' with one flicker of near-sincerity — 'you really can't just hand it to him?' — before raising her phone again. Near dawn, hollow, Kaito finally sets the rice ball down to log it as a defect — and picks up the OTHER identical rice ball beside it, which scans on the very first try, the running beat inverted into pure elation. Then the reveal she planted hours ago pays off: the one he'd been scanning all night was Rin's own snack, brought from home, never store stock, never sellable; the customer's real rice ball would have worked the entire time. But the man left at four, told by Rin's stream that Kaito would never finish, so the sale he finally completed has no buyer. Unable to bear a rung-up rice ball nobody's bought, Kaito buys it himself out of his own wallet — and Rin immediately takes it and bites. 'Man vs Rice Ball. Six hours.' hits four hundred thousand viewers; Kaito gets nothing, not even the rice ball. Dawn light fills the spotless store exactly as the night began — and on the freshly bare counter a stranger sets down a single fresh rice ball, Rin's phone already raised, already live.

Interior of a 24-hour Japanese convenience store at 3 a.m., rain streaking the dark windows and an empty street beyond. Behind the register stands Kaito, a tired clerk in a light shirt and dark striped store apron, his name tag reading KAITO. His coworker Rin — small, in an oversized hoodie under her apron, name tag reading RIN, one earbud in — slouches on a stool with her phone. A calm, tired customer in a plain jacket approaches the counter holding a single triangular rice ball in a blank wrapper. Customer: "Just this one, please."
Page 2
Panel 1: Kaito passes the single rice ball over the counter scanner. Kaito: "One rice ball. Easy." Panel 2: The scanner does nothing; his brow furrows. Kaito: "...huh." Panel 3: Rin glances over from her stool. An identical second rice ball sits on the counter near her elbow, beside a half-open snack bag. Rin: "careful. one of those is mine." Panel 4: Tunnel-visioned, Kaito waves her off without looking and passes the rice ball over the dead scanner again. Kaito: "Not now, Rin." Customer: "Take your time."
Page 3
Panel 1: Kaito holds the rice ball flat over the dead scanner, arm extended, his face blank and exhausted. Kaito: "...nothing." Panel 2: Rin raises her phone to film, one earbud in, a faint smirk. Rin: "and we're live." Rin: "man versus rice ball."
Page 4
Panel 1: Kaito turns the rice ball over looking for a barcode; the wrapper is completely blank. Kaito: "There's no code. Where's the code." Panel 2: He jabs at the register keypad. Kaito: "Manual entry. I'll type the— type what." Panel 3: The blank wrapper held up to the fluorescent light. Kaito: "Nothing to type." Panel 4: Wide-eyed and existential, gripping the little rice ball in both hands. Kaito: "An item with no code isn't in the system." Panel 5: Rin films him over the counter. Kaito: "If it's not in the system... does it exist?" Rin: "it's a rice ball." Panel 6: The calm customer waits, hands folded. Customer: "I'm not in a hurry."
Page 5
Panel 1: Kaito holds the small rice ball in both hands at eye level, staring at it like it is cursed, the fluorescent lights humming and rain on the window behind him. Kaito: "What are you." Panel 2: The customer waits patiently, mild, rain streaking the dark glass behind her. Customer: "I can wait."
Page 6
Panel 1: Kaito slaps a thick binder of blank white pages onto the counter and flips through it fast, the rice ball tucked under one arm. Kaito: "Price book. Everything's in the price book." Panel 2: His finger runs down a blank page. Kaito: "Rice balls, rice balls..." Panel 3: He freezes, dawning dread. Kaito: "It lists everything. Except this." Panel 4: Rin narrates deadpan to her phone. Rin: "he found the one rice ball the universe forgot." Panel 5: Kaito clutches the rice ball to his chest, sweating, indignant. Kaito: "That's not funny."
Page 7
Panel 1: The same dead-eyed framing as before — Kaito holds the rice ball flat over the dead scanner, blank and exhausted. Kaito: "...nothing." Panel 2: An extreme close-up of Kaito's blank, exhausted face as a single bead of sweat slides down. No dialogue.

Panel 1: The sliding doors open and the tracksuit regular steps in from the rain — tall, shaved head, grey zip-up tracksuit, carrying a clear plastic bag of empty cans. Panel 2: Kaito leans urgently across the counter, gripping the rice ball. Kaito: "You. You've come here for years." Panel 3: Desperate, holding the rice ball up. Kaito: "Has a rice ball ever — ever — not scanned?" Panel 4: The regular scratches his shaved head, the bag of cans clinking, genuinely puzzled. Regular: "...they scan?" Panel 5: Kaito is stunned. Kaito: "You've never — how do you PAY?" Panel 6: The regular shrugs and ambles toward the glowing cooler while Rin films him. Regular: "it just beeps. usually." Rin: "nobody can confirm the beep."
Page 9
Panel 1: A rumpled drunk salaryman in a loosened tie sways up to the counter holding a can of coffee. Salaryman: "you still open?" Panel 2: Frazzled, Kaito holds up the stubborn rice ball. Kaito: "This won't scan. Do you know anything about barcodes?" Panel 3: The salaryman squints and raises one finger, drunk and very confident. Salaryman: "rub it. on your sleeve. always works." Panel 4: Kaito solemnly rubs the rice ball on his striped apron while Rin films, delighted. Rin: "he's actually doing it." Panel 5: He holds the rubbed rice ball to the scanner — still nothing, his face falling. Kaito: "Still nothing."
Page 10
Panel 1: Kaito holds a beige store phone to his ear, the stubborn rice ball in his other hand. Kaito: "Head office. Someone there scans things for a living." Panel 2: Close on his exhausted face as hold music plays. Kaito: "...hold music." Panel 3: He has slid down to sit behind the counter, still on hold, the rice ball balanced on his knee. Kaito: "A thing that can't be sold. Can't be given away." Panel 4: Rin peers over the counter edge, filming him on the floor. Kaito: "It just... is." Rin: "deep."
Page 11
A single quiet panel: Kaito sits slumped against the counter and weakly holds the rice ball up toward the scanner above him, his face blank and exhausted. Kaito: "...nothing."
Page 12
Panel 1: Rin lowers her phone for the first time all night, looking down at Kaito on the floor, unexpectedly genuine. Rin: "hey. you really can't just hand it to him?" Panel 2: Kaito looks up, tired but earnest. Kaito: "A sale that never rings up isn't a sale." Panel 3: Holding the rice ball in both hands, sincere. Kaito: "He'd walk out with a little hole in the night. I can't leave a hole." Panel 4: Rin blinks, something landing for a beat, then slowly raises the phone again, her smirk returning. Rin: "...huh." Rin: "okay that's going in the edit."
Page 13
Panel 1: A hollow, defeated Kaito rises and sets the rice ball down on the counter beside the identical second rice ball, reaching for a clipboard with a blank sheet. Kaito: "Fine. I'll log you as a defect." Panel 2: Close on the two identical triangular rice balls sitting side by side on the counter, indistinguishable, both in plain blank wrappers.
Page 14
Panel 1: Kaito's hand reaches out and picks up one of the two identical rice balls to bin it. Panel 2: Rin, phone lowered a hair, points at the rice ball in his hand. Rin: "uh— that one's the store's." Panel 3: She points at the other rice ball still on the counter beside her snack bag. Rin: "the one you've been scanning all night is mine. brought it from home." Panel 4: Kaito freezes in slow, dawning horror, eyes flicking between the two identical rice balls. Kaito: "...yours." Panel 5: Eye twitching, now holding the store's rice ball in hollow disbelief. Kaito: "I've been fighting your snack. For six hours."
Page 15
A big splash panel mirroring the running beat, but triumphant: Kaito holds the store's rice ball flat over the scanner as it wakes with a soft glow, his exhausted face cracking into pure radiant joy, eyes wide. Rin films in the background. Kaito: "IT SCANNED." Kaito: "It's real! It exists!"
Page 16
Panel 1: Kaito spins toward the customer's spot at the counter, holding the scanned rice ball up in triumph. Kaito: "Sir! It scanned! You can—" Panel 2: The spot at the counter is empty. Rain still on the windows, the first faint pre-dawn grey outside. Panel 3: Rin, still filming, flat and matter-of-fact. Rin: "oh. he left at four." Panel 4: She gives a small shrug behind her phone. Rin: "the stream told him you'd never finish. he didn't wanna wait six hours for a rice ball." Panel 5: Kaito stands alone holding a rice ball nobody is buying, dead-eyed and hollow. Kaito: "...it finally scanned."
Page 17
Panel 1: Unable to bear a rung-up rice ball with no buyer, Kaito pulls out his own worn wallet. Kaito: "A scanned item has to be sold. I'll... buy it myself." Panel 2: He solemnly places his own coins on the counter beside the rice ball. Kaito: "There. The night is balanced." Panel 3: Rin's hand instantly plucks the rice ball off the counter and she bites into it, phone still raised. Rin: "mm." Panel 4: Kaito stares at her, utterly betrayed. Kaito: "That was MINE. I just bought it." Panel 5: Rin, chewing, deadpan to her camera. Rin: "man versus rice ball. six hours. four hundred thousand."
Page 18
A wide shot mirroring the opening page exactly, same camera angle, but now pale dawn light fills the spotless store and the rain has eased, the street pale beyond the windows. Kaito stands behind the register, empty-handed and dead-eyed. Rin is back on her stool, phone already raised and filming. On the freshly bare counter, a new stranger's hand sets down a single fresh triangular rice ball in a plain blank wrapper. Stranger: "Just this one, please." Kaito: "...no."
