A wide establishing panel of a 24-hour Japanese convenience store in the small hours. Fluorescent tubes buzz over shelves of drinks, a magazine rack, and a glowing hot-food case. Through the front windows the street is dark, wet, and empty. Kaito, the tired 32-year-old clerk in a striped store apron and a name tag reading KAITO, stands calmly behind the register counter. Nearby, Rin, a small 19-year-old in an oversized hoodie under her apron with a name tag reading RIN and one earbud in, sits slouched on a stool looking at her phone. RIN: Dead night.
Page 2
A medium panel. Kaito faces forward behind the counter, shoulders hunched, flat deadpan eyes, a single bead of sweat at his temple and his mouth caught open in a startled hiccup. At the right edge Rin lifts her phone to film him, unbothered. KAITO: HIC! RIN: Bless you.
Page 3
A single panel. Kaito tips a plain unlabeled water bottle up to his mouth, drinking with grim, dead-eyed determination — his first attempt to cure the hiccups. In the foreground Rin holds her phone up to film him, half-lidded and bored. RIN: Attempt one.
Page 4
A single panel. A salaryman customer — rumpled grey suit, loosened dark tie, thick square black-framed glasses, thinning combed-over hair — leans in over the counter and raises one finger with helpful authority. Across the counter Kaito faces him, tired and unconvinced. SALARYMAN: Hold your breath.
Page 5
A single panel. Kaito holds his breath behind the counter — cheeks puffed out, face reddening, eyes squeezed shut in grim focus, both hands gripping the counter edge. Rin stands at his side filming on her phone, unbothered. RIN: Attempt two.
Page 6
A medium panel echoing the earlier hiccup shot exactly — same pose, same framing — as Kaito's held breath fails. Shoulders hunched, deadpan eyes, sweat bead, mouth open mid-hiccup. Rin keeps filming from the right edge. KAITO: HIC! RIN: Still going.
Page 7
A single panel. A young woman customer — long dark braid over one shoulder, round wire glasses, oversized cream cardigan, a canvas tote bag on her shoulder — mimes a spoon to her mouth as she offers her cure. Across the counter Kaito faces her, exhausted and deadpan. YOUNG WOMAN: Spoon of sugar.
Page 8
A single panel. Kaito grimly eats a heaping spoonful of sugar from a plain metal spoon, holding an unlabeled jar, his face a small grimace of resignation — his third attempt. Rin films close on her phone, a tiny smirk on her face. RIN: Attempt three.
Page 9
A medium panel repeating the hiccup shot a third time, same pose and framing, Kaito now utterly defeated with two beads of sweat and his mouth open mid-hiccup. Rin stands at the right edge, still filming. KAITO: HIC! RIN: Unkillable.
Page 10
A single panel. The store's tracksuit regular — navy zip-up tracksuit with white side stripes, shaved head, a white towel around his neck, rubber sandals — leans in over the counter with a grave, knowing look and delivers the final folk remedy. Across the counter Kaito meets him with a flat expression of quiet dread. TRACKSUIT REGULAR: Someone has to scare you.
Page 11
A large reaction panel. Pale grey-blue dawn light fills the front windows. The morning delivery driver — stocky, buzz-cut, cap, short-sleeved uniform — bursts in through the sliding doors carrying a stacked plastic crate and shouts a cheerful greeting. Behind the counter Kaito jolts violently, eyes huge and round, his whole body flinching in shock. DELIVERY DRIVER: MORNING!
Page 12
A wide panel mirroring the opening composition, now lit by pale dawn through the windows. Kaito stands behind the register, blinking, one hand on his chest, quietly stunned and relieved — the hiccups finally shocked out of him. Rin sits on her stool holding up her phone with a faint, triumphant smirk. KAITO: ...They're gone. RIN: Called it. Right on time.
