Wide night shot of a spotless 24-hour convenience store; Kaito yawns and wipes the counter while Rin sits on a stool on her phone, rain on the dark windows.
Rin opens a plain foil snack bag on the counter; Kaito's nose twitches and he asks if she smells something, and she flatly says "Smell what."
Kaito lifts his nose, sniffing the air and tracking a sour smell across the aisle, while Rin ignores him on her phone.
Kaito checks the trash bin, dropping to all fours to sniff it and muttering "Stronger here," but finds it clean and empty; Rin films him.
The tall shaved-head tracksuit regular enters with a bag of empty cans; Kaito asks if he smells it, and the man shrugs, "Smells like a store."
Dense page: Kaito rattles off theories about the smell's source — the drain, the vents, inside the walls — while Rin deadpans that maybe it's just a smell.
A quiet full-page panel: Kaito stands alone in a spotless aisle, eyes closed, nose lifted, arms slightly out, tracking the smell like a bloodhound.
Kaito sticks his head into the glowing drink cooler to sniff the vent, mutters "Stronger here," then deflates holding an ordinary cold bottle.
A tired salaryman enters and, when Kaito begs him to confirm the smell, recoils gagging that something's rotting; Kaito throws up his hands, vindicated.
Dense page: Kaito tears the store apart searching, sniffs under the counter muttering "Stronger here," finds only a clean empty box; the store is now buried in boxes.
A cheerful jogger bounces in and, when asked, insists the air smells fresh as anything; Kaito goes hollow — three witnesses, three answers.
Rin lowers her phone for a moment, softening as she watches Kaito slumped among the boxes — "You really can't let it go, huh" — then raises it again.
Kaito sits cross-legged on the floor among the boxes, staring into the middle distance, and quietly wonders whether the smell is him — whether he's the source.
Beaten, Kaito gives up and sinks onto the stool beside Rin behind the counter, exhaling; Rin deadpans "welcome to the stool."
Sitting still at last, Kaito's nose twitches — the running beat inverts. He freezes mid-sniff, "Stronger here," and turns in dread toward the counter beside Rin, where a blank foil bag sits.
Rin lifts the plain half-eaten foil snack bag that sat beside her all night — "Yeah, it's pretty rank" — and Kaito realizes with horror the source was an arm away the whole time.
Dawn mirrors the opening shot: Rin's stream hit four hundred thousand, she eats the last chip Kaito refuses, then opens a fresh foil bag — and Kaito's nose twitches all over again.

3 A.M., rain on the dead-hours store. Kaito has just cleaned the store to a spotless calm when a smell — faint, sour, unplaceable — drifts through the aisles. Unable to bear one invisible flaw in his immaculate kingdom, and certain something is rotting before the morning delivery arrives, he declares war on the smell and sets out to find its source. The catch: the smell is real, but nobody can agree where it is. The tracksuit regular can't smell a thing; a tired salaryman swears something has died; a cheerful jogger insists the air is fresh — three verdicts that cannot all be true. Kaito hunts it on hands and knees across the whole store — the trash, the drain, the cooler vents, under the counter — each promising lead landing on the same dead-eyed beat of him freezing nose-first and muttering '...stronger here,' always wrong. Rin quietly livestreams the whole descent as 'What Is That Smell.' She has one flicker of near-sincerity — noticing he genuinely can't let it go — before raising the phone again. Near dawn, broken, Kaito finally gives up and sinks onto the stool beside her — and that is exactly where his nose twitches one last time, the running beat inverting: the smell is strongest right there. Rin lifts the plain half-eaten foil snack bag that has sat open on the counter beside her since the start of the shift — a novelty stink-snack she cracked on camera hours ago. It was the source the entire time, an arm's length from him all night. His six-hour hunt only fed her stream. She offers him the last chip; he refuses to eat the thing that ruined his night, so she eats it herself. 'What Is That Smell — six hours' hits four hundred thousand viewers. Kaito gets nothing. Dawn light fills the spotless store exactly as the night began — and Rin peels open a fresh, even more pungent bag, and Kaito's nose twitches all over again as we cut out.

Page 1

A wide establishing shot of the interior of a spotless 24-hour convenience store in the small hours. Rain streaks the dark windows and the wet, empty street glows outside. Behind the register counter, Kaito — messy black hair, tired eyes, striped store apron, name tag KAITO — yawns mid-stretch and wipes the already-clean counter with a cloth. Nearby, Rin — small, light bob, hoodie under her apron, one earbud in, name tag RIN — sits on a stool staring at her phone. Kaito (thinking): Clean store. Quiet street. Nothing left to fix.

Page 2

Three panels. First, a close view of Rin's hands quietly peeling open a single plain, unlabeled foil snack bag on the counter, one earbud in. Then Kaito behind the counter, one nostril twitching, glancing up from his cloth with a puzzled frown. Finally Rin, half-lidded and unbothered, lowering the blank foil bag below the counter edge without looking up from her phone. Rin: New flavor. For the stream. Kaito: ...Do you smell that? Rin: Smell what.

Page 3

Two panels. First, Kaito standing straight, his cloth forgotten in one hand, nose lifted, sniffing the air with narrowing tired eyes. Then a wider two-shot as he slowly turns his head to track the smell across the aisle while Rin, on her stool, ignores him with her phone raised. Kaito: That. That sour... something. Kaito: ...There it is again. Rin: the vibes are immaculate

Page 4

Four panels — the first appearance of the running beat. Kaito crouches by the hot-food counter's small trash bin, lifting the lid and peering in warily. Then an extreme close-up of him on all fours, nose right at the bin rim, flat dead eyes, frozen mid-sniff. Next he recoils, disappointed, holding up an ordinary clean, empty bin liner — the bin is spotless. In the last panel Rin films him over the counter, deadpan. Kaito: Something in here died. It has to be here. Kaito: ...Stronger here. Kaito: ...It's empty. It's clean. Rin: night one of the hunt

Page 5

Four panels introducing a witness. The sliding doors part and the tracksuit regular steps in — tall, shaved head, grey zip-up tracksuit, carrying a clear plastic bag of empty cans, rain behind him. Kaito lunges to the counter, gripping the edge with wide urgent eyes. The regular pauses, sniffs the air blankly, and shrugs, genuinely puzzled. In the last panel Kaito gives a flat dead-eyed stare toward the reader with a single bead of sweat while Rin films in the corner. Kaito: You. You just walked in — do you smell that? Tracksuit regular: Smell what? Smells like a store. Kaito (thinking): He can't smell it. Rin: unreliable witness

Page 6

A dense six-panel page as Kaito builds his case. He paces behind the counter ticking possibilities off on his fingers, then gestures sharply at the floor drain, then points up at a ceiling vent with widening eyes. Rin, half-lidded, doesn't look up from her phone. Kaito wheels on her with both palms flat on the counter, comically wide-eyed. Rin raises her phone a little higher with a tiny smirk. Kaito: Okay. A smell needs a source. Kaito: The floor drain. Backed up. Kaito: Or the vents. Or the walls. Inside the walls. Rin: or it's just a smell and you're normal about it Kaito: Nothing is JUST a smell, Rin. Rin: chapter two: inside the walls

Page 7

A single quiet full-page panel. Kaito stands alone in the middle of a spotless aisle, eyes closed and nose lifted, arms held slightly out, tracking the smell like a bloodhound in the buzzing fluorescent silence. Rain runs down the far windows behind him. Kaito (thinking): ...This way.

Page 8

Three panels — the running beat returns. Kaito reaches up into the glowing drink cooler, head half inside, sniffing near the vent with his breath fogging faintly. Then an extreme close-up of his nose at the cooler vent, flat dead eyes, frozen mid-sniff in the same pose as before. Finally he pulls back, deflated, holding a perfectly ordinary cold drink bottle and staring at it. Kaito: The cooler. Cold rot. Classic. Kaito: ...Stronger here. Kaito: ...It's just cold. It's just a drink.

Page 9

Four panels — the second witness, who contradicts the first. A tired salaryman in a rumpled suit and loosened tie shuffles in through the sliding doors, rain behind him. Kaito springs to the counter toward him, desperate, gripping the edge. The salaryman freezes, wrinkles his whole face, and recoils with a hand to his nose. Kaito wheels around wild-eyed and vindicated, both hands thrown up in exhausted triumph, while Rin films flatly. Kaito: Sir — please — do you smell it? Salaryman: Ugh — yeah. Something's rotting in here. Kaito: THANK you. It's REAL. Rin: finally, a believer

Page 10

A dense five-panel search montage — the third and final straight run of the beat. Kaito stands on a stepstool pulling boxes off a high shelf as they tumble around him, then kneels and yanks open the low cabinet under the register counter, half diving in. An extreme close-up shows his nose down under the counter, flat dead eyes, frozen mid-sniff in the identical pose. He backs out holding a single ordinary clean, empty cardboard box, baffled. In the wide final panel the once-spotless store is a mess of pulled boxes around him while Rin films from her stool, unbothered. Kaito: If it's real, it has a place. Everything has a place. Kaito: Under here. Has to be under here. Kaito: ...Stronger here. Kaito: ...Nothing. Clean. Again. Rin: he's redecorating

Page 11

Four panels — the third witness, who contradicts both others. A cheerful jogger in a track top and shorts bounces in through the sliding doors, upbeat, rain behind him. Kaito, disheveled and kneeling in the box-mess, looks up hollowly. The jogger takes a big cheerful breath, gives a thumbs up, and beams. Kaito's face goes blank and hollow as he sinks; Rin films. Kaito: You. Fresh nose. Tell me you smell it. Jogger: Nope! Smells fresh as anything in here! Kaito (thinking): ...Three people. Three answers. Rin: science

Page 12

Two quiet panels — Rin's single flicker of near-sincerity. She lowers her phone for once and actually watches Kaito, slumped and defeated among the boxes, a flicker of something soft in her half-lidded eyes. Then she raises the phone again, flat and unbothered once more. Rin: ...You really can't let it go, huh. Rin: anyway. keep going.

Page 13

Two panels at the peak of Kaito's spiral. A large panel shows him sitting cross-legged on the floor amid the scattered boxes, staring into the middle distance, hollow and existential under the buzzing fluorescent light. A tight close-up follows on his dead, exhausted eyes. Kaito: A smell some people smell and some don't. That no one can find. Kaito: ...What if the smell is me. What if I'm the source.

Page 14

Three panels of surrender. Kaito hauls himself up, hollow and beaten, and shuffles behind the counter. He sinks onto the stool right beside Rin, slumping with a long exhale and his eyes shut. Rin, phone still up, gives him a deadpan sideways glance. Kaito: ...I give up. It wins. Kaito: Six hours. For a smell. Rin: welcome to the stool

Page 15

Three panels — the running beat inverts. Now that Kaito is sitting still and defeated, a close-up shows one nostril twitching, a question mark forming above him. Then the identical beat pose returns in extreme close-up — nose lifting, flat eyes snapping open, frozen mid-sniff — but this time turned toward the counter beside him. Finally his head turns slowly, dread building, toward Rin and the counter surface right beside her, where a plain foil bag sits. Kaito: ...Stronger here. Kaito: ...It's strongest... right here.

Page 16

Four panels — the reveal. Rin calmly lifts a single plain, half-eaten unlabeled foil snack bag from the counter right beside her, holding it up between two fingers. Kaito stares at the bag, horror dawning, an inset flashing back to the same bag being opened at the start of the shift. He collapses dead-eyed toward the reader, jaw slack. Rin, with a tiny smirk, holds the bag and keeps filming. Rin: Oh. This? Yeah, it's pretty rank. Kaito: ...That. You opened that. Hours ago. Kaito: It was on the counter. The whole. Time. Rin: an arm away. six hours.

Page 17

Three panels closing the loop. A wide shot mirrors the opening page, but now dawn light fills the spotless-again store as the morning-delivery doors part and the wet street brightens; Kaito stands hollow and empty-handed behind the counter while Rin sits on the stool, phone up. Then Rin holds out the last chip from the blank foil bag; Kaito, dead-eyed, turns his face away and refuses, so she pops it into her own mouth. In the final panel Rin peels open a fresh second plain foil bag as Kaito's nose twitches all over again in the dawn light, his dread returning. Rin: What Is That Smell. Six hours. Four hundred thousand. Rin: Last one. No? Suit yourself. Kaito: ...Do you smell that. Rin: here we go
