Without even looking at him, Momo raises a coat-swallowed hand to hush Ganta, her magnifying glass held ready, eyes sweeping the room. The sunbeam on the floor is small now, sliding toward the window. MOMO: 'Hush. You'll spook the culprit.'

Momo stands with her back half-turned to Ganta, raising one cuffed hand to hush him without looking, her magnifying glass up in the other hand, eyes narrowed at the room. A small sunbeam patch sits on the floor, receding toward the window.

About this chapter

Late afternoon at the Tiny Case Agency, the warm patch of sunlight on the floor is shrinking — and Momo is certain a light-thief is dragging the daylight out the window inch by inch. She measures the theft, stalks the retreating gold across the room, clears a sleeping Biscuit, and finally corners the last sliver on the windowsill and pounces — just as it winks out at dusk. Ganta tells her on page five that the sun is going down. She hushes him and chases it anyway. Unable to admit the sun simply set, Momo declares the thief escaped with the daylight and vows the agency will recover every drop tomorrow, then falls asleep in the blue dusk. Ganta delivers the verdict once she is out: the sun set — it comes back on its own.
