Page 1. A wide establishing panel of the Tiny Case Agency clubroom — a low wooden desk with the chipped pencil mug, a stack of cardboard boxes, a blank corkboard, a small white mini-fridge, a folding metal chair and a single square window with warm low afternoon sun. Momo, in her too-big mustard-yellow trench coat and dusty-red scarf, crouches near the floorboards and points at a short curving line of pale dusty boot-prints. Ganta sits on the boxes with his pale-blue juice box, and Biscuit is curled asleep in her open cardboard box. MOMO: 'A footprint. We are not alone.'

About this chapter

Momo spots a trail of pale dusty boot-prints on the clubroom floor and declares that an intruder is circling the Tiny Case Agency. She follows the tracks around the room, magnifying glass out — and each lap she is certain there are MORE of them, a whole gang closing the ring. Ganta tells her on page five that they are her own boots. She hushes him and keeps circling, adding fresh prints with every step, until the trail loops right back to the two little boots on her own feet. Unable to admit she spent the afternoon chasing herself, Momo declares she surrounded the gang and drove them off, closes the case, and falls asleep inside the ring of prints. Ganta delivers the verdict once she is out: she walked in a circle.
