Panel 1: Wide shot — Darcy alone at the perimeter of the warm party, charcoal overcoat, cool blue-grey light on him against the amber crowd, watching without interest. Panel 2: Close on Darcy's face, flat and completely closed off, steel-grey eyes, dark brows drawn slightly together. Panel 3: Bingley bounds over to Darcy, gesturing enthusiastically at the room, all warmth. Bingley: "Don't just stand here all night." Panel 4: Close on Darcy, entirely unmoved, hands still in his coat pockets. Darcy: "I don't dance with strangers." Panel 5: Bingley scans the crowd, his face lighting up as he spots someone, and points subtly across the room. Bingley: "Elizabeth's right there. She's lovely." Panel 6: Wide staging shot — Bingley and Darcy talking in the foreground while Lizzie stands only a few steps away, her back half-turned, clearly within earshot and unnoticed by them.

Darcy stands alone at the edge of the party until Bingley bounds over to urge him to join in. Darcy refuses, and Bingley points out Elizabeth across the room — while Lizzie stands just a few steps away, within earshot and unnoticed.
About this chapter
The assembly party — the night everything starts. Bingley arrives and is instantly adored; Darcy is admired for about half an hour before the whole town decides he is insufferable. Bingley and Jane find each other immediately. When Bingley urges his friend to dance with Lizzie, Darcy calls her tolerable — not handsome enough to tempt him — and Lizzie is close enough to hear every word. She turns it into a joke and tells it all night.
