Panel 1: Charles Bingley appears in the party doorway — auburn wavy hair, rust-colored blazer over a cream t-shirt, bright hazel eyes, a wide genuine smile, warm amber light on him. He is delighted by the room. Panel 2: Bingley greets a guest with real warmth, leaning in, beaming, shaking hands. Bingley: "Everyone here is so friendly!" Panel 3: Bingley moves through the crowd shaking more hands, people smiling back at him. He is instantly liked. Panel 4: Fitzwilliam Darcy enters a step behind — very tall, charcoal-grey tailored overcoat, near-black hair swept back, deep-set steel-grey eyes, expression flat and unreadable. He does not look at anyone. Cool blue-grey light sets him against the warm room. Panel 5: Wide contrast shot — Bingley laughing with guests on one side, Darcy standing apart on the other, hands in his coat pockets, silent and closed off. Panel 6: A knot of well-dressed partygoers watch Darcy from across the room with impressed, appraising expressions, murmuring to each other.

Charles Bingley arrives at the party, warm and smiling, greeting guests and shaking hands. A step behind him comes Fitzwilliam Darcy — tall, cold, in a charcoal overcoat, standing apart from the crowd while partygoers watch him with interest.

About this chapter

The assembly party — the night everything starts. Bingley arrives and is instantly adored; Darcy is admired for about half an hour before the whole town decides he is insufferable. Bingley and Jane find each other immediately. When Bingley urges his friend to dance with Lizzie, Darcy calls her tolerable — not handsome enough to tempt him — and Lizzie is close enough to hear every word. She turns it into a joke and tells it all night.
