The assembly party — the night everything starts. Bingley arrives and is instantly adored; Darcy is admired for about half an hour before the whole town decides he is insufferable. Bingley and Jane find each other immediately. When Bingley urges his friend to dance with Lizzie, Darcy calls her tolerable — not handsome enough to tempt him — and Lizzie is close enough to hear every word. She turns it into a joke and tells it all night.

Panel 1: Wide establishing shot of the warm Bennet living room in evening chaos — dresses draped over chair backs, a standing mirror, all five sisters in various states of getting ready under warm lamplight. Panel 2: Mrs. Bennet sweeps across the room, phone in one hand, floral blouse and beaded necklace, directing everyone at once. Mrs. Bennet: "Tonight is the night!" Panel 3: Close on Mrs. Bennet delivering her gossip intelligence, delighted, counting on her fingers. Mrs. Bennet: "Twelve ladies and seven gentlemen!" Panel 4: Lizzie adjusts the collar of her olive utility jacket in the mirror, dry and unimpressed, one eyebrow raised. Lizzie: "You always hear wrong." Panel 5: Lydia and Kitty squabble over a lipstick — Lydia bright and pushy, Kitty grabbing it back. Panel 6: Mary sits apart on the sofa with headphones on and a book, completely ignoring the chaos around her.

Panel 1: Large wide establishing shot of a bright modern party venue — string lights overhead, music, a warm buzzing crowd of well-dressed people. Panel 2: The Bennet family enters through the venue doors, Mrs. Bennet leading, the girls behind her. Panel 3: Jane in her soft-pink cardigan and Lizzie in her olive jacket stand side by side taking in the room — Jane calm, Lizzie amused. Panel 4: Detail of the party in motion — drinks, laughter, clusters of people talking under warm amber light. Panel 5: The crowd suddenly notices something at the entrance; heads turn in unison and conversation dips. Panel 6: Mrs. Bennet grips Kitty's arm hard, thrilled, staring toward the door. Mrs. Bennet: "That's him. That's got to be him."

Panel 1: Charles Bingley appears in the party doorway — auburn wavy hair, rust-colored blazer over a cream t-shirt, bright hazel eyes, a wide genuine smile, warm amber light on him. He is delighted by the room. Panel 2: Bingley greets a guest with real warmth, leaning in, beaming, shaking hands. Bingley: "Everyone here is so friendly!" Panel 3: Bingley moves through the crowd shaking more hands, people smiling back at him. He is instantly liked. Panel 4: Fitzwilliam Darcy enters a step behind — very tall, charcoal-grey tailored overcoat, near-black hair swept back, deep-set steel-grey eyes, expression flat and unreadable. He does not look at anyone. Cool blue-grey light sets him against the warm room. Panel 5: Wide contrast shot — Bingley laughing with guests on one side, Darcy standing apart on the other, hands in his coat pockets, silent and closed off. Panel 6: A knot of well-dressed partygoers watch Darcy from across the room with impressed, appraising expressions, murmuring to each other.

Panel 1: Mrs. Bennet, awed, hand to her beaded necklace, stares across the room at Darcy. Mrs. Bennet: "Do you know what that man is worth?" Panel 2: Two partygoers whisper admiringly behind their hands, glancing at Darcy. Panel 3: A hopeful guest approaches Darcy with a friendly opening gesture. Panel 4: Darcy declines with a small flat shake of his head, barely turning toward the person — coldly polite. Panel 5: The rebuffed guest's face falls, then hardens. Panel 6: Two partygoers lean close together, their admiration curdled into visible offense. Partygoer: "...Who does he think he is?"

Panel 1: Medium two-shot — Bingley and Jane meeting for the first time. He is lit up and animated; she is softly pleased. Easy, instant warmth. Panel 2: Close on Bingley, completely taken, smiling at Jane. Bingley: "I'd have remembered meeting you." Panel 3: Close on Jane, a genuine unguarded smile breaking through her usual composure. Panel 4: Wide shot — Bingley and Jane talking together while the party moves around them in soft focus, both oblivious to the room. Panel 5: Lizzie watches her sister from across the room, arms crossed, warmly amused. Panel 6: Close on Lizzie with a small private smirk, one eyebrow raised. Lizzie: "Well. That was fast."

Panel 1: Wide shot — Darcy alone at the perimeter of the warm party, charcoal overcoat, cool blue-grey light on him against the amber crowd, watching without interest. Panel 2: Close on Darcy's face, flat and completely closed off, steel-grey eyes, dark brows drawn slightly together. Panel 3: Bingley bounds over to Darcy, gesturing enthusiastically at the room, all warmth. Bingley: "Don't just stand here all night." Panel 4: Close on Darcy, entirely unmoved, hands still in his coat pockets. Darcy: "I don't dance with strangers." Panel 5: Bingley scans the crowd, his face lighting up as he spots someone, and points subtly across the room. Bingley: "Elizabeth's right there. She's lovely." Panel 6: Wide staging shot — Bingley and Darcy talking in the foreground while Lizzie stands only a few steps away, her back half-turned, clearly within earshot and unnoticed by them.

Panel 1: Close on Darcy glancing over at Lizzie for exactly one second — a cold, flat assessment with no warmth at all. Panel 2: Close on Darcy already turning away as he speaks, dismissive, not looking back. Darcy: "She's tolerable." Panel 3: Darcy in profile, walking off a step, the line delivered flatly over his shoulder. Darcy: "Not handsome enough to tempt me." Panel 4: Close on Lizzie, having heard every word — a single frozen beat of her face registering it. Not wounded; something sharper. Panel 5: Tight close on Lizzie's eyes, her eyebrow going up, the insult converting into ammunition. Panel 6: Lizzie turns away entirely composed, chin up, a smirk arriving. Unbothered.

Panel 1: Lizzie stands with a small group of friends at the party, animated, retelling the story with her hands — making it funny. Panel 2: Close on Lizzie mid-punchline, delighted with herself. Lizzie: "Tolerable! I've been called worse." Panel 3: Her friends laugh hard around her, one covering her mouth. Panel 4: Across the party, Darcy catches the sound of laughter and glances over toward it. Panel 5: Darcy's view across the room — Lizzie laughing in a warm circle of friends, clearly at his expense. Panel 6: Close on Darcy, his expression barely shifting but no longer quite as flat as before. Something registers behind the eyes.

Panel 1: Wide shot — the Bennet family spilling out of the party into a warm streetlit night, the evening over. Panel 2: Mrs. Bennet, triumphant, clutching her phone, glowing with victory. Mrs. Bennet: "Jane and Mr. Bingley! Did you SEE them?" Panel 3: Mrs. Bennet switches to pure outrage without pausing for breath, scowling. Mrs. Bennet: "But that Darcy. Horrible man." Panel 4: Close on Lizzie, dry and entirely at peace, hands in her jacket pockets. Lizzie: "For once, we agree." Panel 5: Medium two-shot of Lizzie and Jane walking home together, easy and close — Jane quietly glowing, Lizzie amused, under warm streetlight. Panel 6: Large final wide shot, looking up from the warm street to the cool-toned glass Netherfield mansion on its hill, a single light on. Caption: "He had no idea what he'd started."
